The Big Island of Hawaiʻi is a land of dramatic contrasts, from black lava fields to snow-capped peaks. But one of its most captivating features is its abundance of lush rainforests and stunning waterfalls. Because we love waterfalls, we set our sights on ʻAkaka Falls State Park, a relatively short but incredibly rewarding hike that leads to two breathtaking cascades: the namesake ʻAkaka Falls and the smaller, yet equally beautiful, Kahūnā Falls.
The drive to the park itself was a treat, winding through verdant landscapes thick with tropical foliage. The air was fragrant with the scent of blooming flowers and damp earth, a sensory prelude to the natural wonders awaiting us. ʻAkaka Falls State Park is easily accessible and well-maintained, with a paved loop trail that makes for a comfortable and picturesque walk.
We opted to take the clockwise route, which first led us to the smaller Kahūnā Falls. While not as towering as its famous neighbor, Kahūnā Falls is still a sight to behold. The water plunges gracefully through the dense rainforest, creating a delicate veil against the backdrop of lush greenery. The air here felt fresh and alive, filled with the sounds of trickling water and chirping birds.
Continuing along the paved path, the anticipation for ʻAkaka Falls began to build. The trail meandered through towering bamboo groves, their stalks swaying gently in the breeze, creating a natural cathedral of green. We passed vibrant orchids and other tropical flowers, adding splashes of color to the already stunning scenery.
Then, through a break in the foliage, we caught our first glimpse of ʻAkaka Falls, and it truly took our breath away. Plunging a dramatic 442 feet (135 meters) into a verdant gorge, it’s a majestic spectacle of nature’s power and beauty. The sheer height of the falls, combined with the surrounding emerald rainforest, creates a scene that feels almost otherworldly.
There are several viewpoints along the trail that offer different perspectives of ʻAkaka Falls, each as captivating as the last. We lingered at each one, simply soaking in the grandeur of the cascading water and the lushness of the surrounding landscape. The sound of the falling water was a constant, soothing roar, a reminder of the natural forces at play.
Our hike to ʻAkaka Falls was a relatively easy trek (about .4 miles) with an incredibly high payoff, delivering stunning waterfall views amidst a vibrant rainforest setting.
