Sometimes, the most extraordinary experiences unfold in the quietest of settings. Our glow worm kayaking tour with Kayak Rotorua was precisely that – a truly unique and almost ethereal adventure that left us spellbound, even if my attempts at capturing its magic on camera fell a little short!
As dusk began to paint the sky in soft hues, we met our friendly guides at the serene Lake Rotoiti. The air was still, the water like glass, reflecting the surrounding native bush. After a quick safety briefing and paddling instructions, we gently pushed our kayaks onto the tranquil lake. The initial paddle was peaceful, a wonderful way to connect with the quiet beauty of the Rotorua region as the last light faded. It felt like we had paddled into an enchanted realm.

Now, for the slightly wistful part: capturing the true beauty of the glow worms on camera proved to be a significant challenge. The low light conditions and the subtle nature of their glow made it difficult to get a photo that truly conveyed the spectacle we were witnessing. My attempts resulted in blurry and somewhat underwhelming images, a stark contrast to the vibrant and mesmerizing reality. This is definitely an experience that is best absorbed and remembered through your own eyes rather than a lens.
Despite my photographic limitations, the memory of gliding silently through the dark water, surrounded by the ethereal glow of these tiny creatures, is vividly etched in my mind.
