About Me
Hi, I’m Denise—the person behind Footprints & Freeways and the one who can’t stop planning the next trip before we’ve even unpacked from the last one.
I’ve been bitten by the travel bug for as long as I can remember. Growing up in New York, I didn’t realize how vast and varied this country was until my early twenties when my sisters and I stood at the rim of the Grand Canyon. That trip changed something in me. A few years later, I combined a work trip with a detour to Chaco Culture National Historical Park in New Mexico, and I was completely hooked. There was this whole incredible country—and world—out there, and I wanted to see as much of it as possible.
In 2015, I met Justin, and he’s been my travel companion ever since. We’ve been exploring together for over a decade now, squeezing adventures into weekends, vacation days, and the occasional extended road trip whenever we can get away. As a child-free couple who both work full-time, we definitely take advantage of the flexibility to get out of town more often.
But this blog isn’t just about the trips Justin and I take together. It’s my digital scrapbook of everywhere I’ve been—solo adventures, trips with friends and family, those early explorations before I met Justin, and of course, all the places we’ve discovered together since 2015. I’m the one usually researching destinations, keeping spreadsheets of potential trips, taking photos, and writing the posts.
I love capturing my travels through photos and videos because those digital memories let me relive the adventures long after I’m home. And honestly? I love having a record of it all, especially as I’ve gotten older—the amazing moments, the incredible food, the unexpected detours, and even the mistakes I’ve made along the way.
What You’ll Find Here
This isn’t a blog about budget hacks, luxury travel, or how to become a digital nomad. I’m just a regular person who loves to travel and wants to document it. My trips vary wildly—weekend road trips to Nebraska, two weeks in Alaska, quick city breaks, lengthy international adventures. Some are meticulously planned, others are more spontaneous. Some go perfectly, others… well, those make for better stories anyway.
What I share here are honest, unfiltered accounts of where I’ve been and what it was really like. Not to tell you where to go or how to do it “right,” but to give you a real-life perspective that might help you plan your own adventures, learn from my mistakes, or maybe discover a hidden gem you hadn’t considered.
And if Justin occasionally chimes in with thoughts on golf courses, craft beer, or whatever he’s currently obsessed with? Well, I’ll let him have his moment.
Welcome to my little corner of the world! I’m Denise.
My serious case of wanderlust kicked off when I was 22, and it’s been the driving force behind my passion ever since. Travel, to me, is the ultimate form of self-care and relaxation. When I’m not focused on my full-time work, I’m excitedly planning my next Footprint or mapping out the next Freeway. I truly believe that weaving wonder into a busy life is achievable for everyone, and I’m here to show you exactly how I do it.
My Slow-Paced Approach
I’m a slow-paced explorer, happy to tag along on tours, dive deep into a historical site, or just cruise down a beautiful road. You won’t find any daring feats or adrenaline-pumping activities here—I prefer to slow down and soak it all in. I love keeping busy on trips because I’m not sure when I’ll have the chance to return, and you’ll see the joy I find in planning every detail of those adventures!
Why I Share My Adventures
This site is my digital scrapbook—a collection of snapshots from my travels, a visual diary of the beautiful corners of the world I’ve been lucky enough to see and bucket list activities. I don’t write endless guides; I tell stories and share the beautiful recaps, the honest challenges, and the tried-and-true recommendations that come from real-world trips.
My Love of Discovery: I travel to learn, not just to rest. From the grand history of National Parks to the specific stories of ancient sites, I love coming away from a trip with new knowledge and sharing those discoveries with you.
The Open Road: I enjoy a good road trip, especially taking the scenic routes to be able to see more of our landscape.
Partner: Justin is always along for the ride, and you’ll spot his contributions (especially on the lighter side of travel) in many of the posts!
Let’s prove that a demanding life doesn’t mean a dull life. I’m so excited to share my favorite memories with you!
I’m Justin, Denise’s partner in life and, apparently, in navigating the globe (though sometimes at a slightly different pace!). For me, travel is about discovery and unwinding. You’ll often find me happiest exploring a new city’s history, wandering through fascinating historic sites, or, let’s be honest, sampling the local brews at a nearby brewery.
While I love experiencing new things, I definitely lean towards the relaxed side of the spectrum – quality over quantity is my motto, and sometimes Denise’s enthusiasm for packing in the activities requires a strategic nap!
Food is definitely a highlight of my travels and I’ve had the pleasure of trying all sorts of exotic local dishes. I also love music and am in charge of our playlists for longer drives.
Join me as I share my travel experiences, often at a leisurely pace and definitely with a focus on history, good food, and the quest for ultimate relaxation (and maybe a quiet corner away from the crowds).
A Note About This Blog
Footprints & Freeways officially launched in 2025, but the adventures you’ll find here go back much further. I’ve tried my hand at blogging twice before but time and life stopped them (#1 2010-2015 and #2 late 2019-2021), so I’ve brought some of that earlier content about travel over to give it a proper home. You’ll also find retrospective posts where I’m documenting trips from years past—digging through old photos and memories to capture adventures I never wrote about at the time.
Because of this, the timeline gets interesting: some posts are from solo trips or adventures with friends in my twenties, others are from those early years with Justin after we met in 2015, and plenty are fresh from recent travels. Whether a post was written in real-time or years after the fact, each one captures what made that trip special—the good, the bad, and the “why didn’t we take more pictures?” moments.
This time around, I’m committed. Footprints & Freeways is where all these stories finally live together—a complete digital scrapbook of everywhere I’ve been and everywhere I’m going next. Thanks for coming along for the ride.
