A Backcountry 4×4 Adventure in Ouray, CO

Ouray, Colorado, often dubbed the “Switzerland of America,” lives up to its majestic reputation with stunning mountain scenery and a rich mining history. Eager to explore beyond the paved roads, we booked a Yankee Boy + Governor Basins tour with Alpine Scenic 4×4 Tours. This 4-hour excursion turned out to be a fantastic way to experience the rugged beauty of the San Juan Mountains.

One of the first things I appreciated was the small group size. Their custom truck had just nine seats, making for an intimate experience. The seats themselves were comfortable (it looked like other companies had more of a single bus bench seat vs an individual seat), and while the seatbelt wasn’t mandatory on the off-road sections, I opted to keep mine fastened for the entire ride. With three rows of three, I snagged an end seat in the back row, sacrificing being right next to my friend for what promised to be a better, unobstructed view – a decision I was ultimately happy with.

We were incredibly lucky with the weather that day. The skies were a brilliant blue, a welcome contrast to the previous day when we’d been unexpectedly caught in a dramatic hail storm. Dry skies and roads made the off-roading adventure even more appealing. Our guide, whose name unfortunately escapes me now, was friendly and clearly passionate about the area. He made several thoughtful stops along the way, even sharing photos of people or what the landscape looked like back when, which added context to what we were seeing.

Leaving the charming town of Ouray behind, we soon found ourselves bumping along winding dirt roads, the air crisp and clean. There were perhaps two sections of the trail that offered a touch of adrenaline, with narrow passages and the thrill of a cliffside drop-off – enough to make it exciting without being overly nerve-wracking. The landscape was simply breathtaking, a panorama of towering peaks, verdant valleys, and the remnants of the area’s mining past.

As we gained elevation, the flora began to change. Our guide proudly pointed out the distinctive “Elephant Head” wildflowers, their broad, textured leaves easily recognizable. I was also delighted to spot a few Columbines, the delicate purple and white blooms of the Colorado state flower, adding splashes of color to the rugged terrain. But peak wildflower was a few weeks earlier so not as many or as bright.

Above the treeline we entered the windswept expanse of Governor Basin. The views from here were truly spectacular, offering a vast panorama of the surrounding peaks. We had ample time to get some photos and realize just how small we are compared to the landscape.

The four hours seemed to fly by. While the tour was an “in and out” route rather than a loop, seeing the landscape from both directions offered a different perspective and made the journey feel complete. I was incredibly grateful to be on this adventure with a guide so experienced in navigating these challenging roads. It allowed me to completely relax, soak in the incredible scenery, and fully appreciate the rugged beauty of the San Juan Mountains without any of the stress of driving. If you’re looking for an exhilarating and visually stunning way to explore the backcountry around Ouray, I highly recommend booking a tour with a knowledgeable local company like Alpine Scenic 4×4 Tours. It’s an unforgettable way to discover less accessible areas of this region.
